The project involves the removal of an existing two-lane bridge spanning IH 35 and replacing it with a four-lane bridge, plus two raised turnarounds on each side. The northbound and southbound frontage roads will be replaced and widened, as will the street extending from the bridge on either side. Both of the cities of Kyle and San Marcos (located on either side of the project) have requested a new waterline placed from a nearby water treatment facility, and Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has decided to make the new waterline part of the roadway project. A new duct bank for local communication companies will also be a part of the project. The tunnel bore will run under IH 35 from side to side. The IH 35 Hays County project is OHL’s first central Texas contract for TxDOT.
Benefits to the community
IH 35 is one of the busiest highways in the United States, and a main international connector between the United States and Mexico. The San Marcos and Kyle areas are both growing communities that are rapidly becoming vital suburbs to south Austin and Northern San Antonio. San Marcos is home to Texas State University, one of the largest universities in the state. The project improves mobility in this thriving area.
